To say the seal hunt is an emotionally charged subject, is an understatement. In March of 2004, I visited the killing grounds of the Canadian seal hunt as a photojournalist, with New York Times reporter Cliff Krauss. Documenting the seal hunt in the pack ice is not for the squeamish or faint of heart. Trying to separate the journalist’s personal feelings concerning the brutality of the hunt and whether it should be allowed to continue, is a challenge that can cloud journalistic responsibility for providing the facts and the truth. I am a supporter of the seal hunt, but not of the hysteria that it brings. If there is a thorough census of Harp seal numbers, and the hunt is strictly monitored, it should be allowed to continue as long as the seal numbers warrant a hunt.
