I have visited the Arctic on a number of occasions with the New York Times. Many, (but not all) of our First Peoples live a life of squalor as third-class citizens, in isolated satellite communities, far from employment and opportunity. Our government representatives have relegated them to the back of the bus when it comes to their needs for the simplest of requirements, such as clean drinking water and an adequate education for their children. They are the forgotten Canadians, the first Canadians, though they exemplify virtue and possess a fabulously wealthy history. My coverage and in-depth knowledge of native peoples include the Inuit, Mohawk, Cree, Ojibwa, Miqmaq, etc.
